Liam Charron is a pianist, composer and arranger currently based in southeast Michigan and the Detroit Metro area. Liam has developed a deep passion for jazz and contemporary improvised music through a growing number of ensembles, performances and projects; in his work, he strives to spark connections and conversations with musicians and listeners, creating a space for personal expression that can only be found through the arts.

Liam was born and raised in Piedmont, California. He started his musical journey at age six with piano lessons, and took up French horn at age 10. After discovering jazz through simple boogie woogie excerpts, he swiftly joined his middle school jazz band and began taking lessons with local jazz educators around the San Francisco Bay Area. In the next few years, Liam would also spend time learning electric guitar, singing in rock bands, and taking classical vocal lessons.

During high school, Liam played with big bands and small groups through the school’s jazz department - his small group was recognized at the WorldStrides Onstage Hollywood competition in 2019 and the CMEA Bay Section Jazz South Festival in 2020. He also spent transformative and inspiring summers at the Stanford Jazz Workshop, Lafayette Summer Jazz Workshop, and Summer at Eastman Jazz program during these years. At the end of his high school career, Liam was accepted into the renowned University of Michigan School of Music, Theater and Dance.

During his time studying Jazz and Contemplative Studies at the University of Michigan (UM), Liam Charron has played in school ensembles like the UM Jazz Ensemble, and has formed extracurricular groups like the Liam Charron Trio. His jazz trio recorded an album in the Duderstadt Audio studio in the winter of 2023, which can be found on Bandcamp or through his website, liamcharron.com. Liam has also composed and recorded musical works - and served as a core team member - for large-scale projects through the University of Michigan Museum of Art and Neuroarts Productions, and his arrangements have been played by the UM Jazz Lab Ensemble. Liam has also started teaching private lessons during this time, focusing on areas like jazz piano technique, improvisation, composition, and musicianship.

Liam has played in southeast Michigan venues like Hill Auditorium, Cliff Bells and Ziggys, as well as venues in the San Francisco Bay area like Yoshi’s. He’s performed with artists like Robert Hurst, Kyle Athayde, Eddie Barbash, Alan Ferber, Allen Denard, Paul Keller, Olivia Van Goor, Jeff Hamilton and more. Liam has also been mentored by Andy Milne, Ellen Rowe, Dennis Wilson, Roger Jones, Miles Okazaki, Kyle Athayde, and Ben Stolorow.
